Types of AI: From Narrow AI to General AI
By NineFoxLab
1. What Are AI Types?
AI can be categorized based on its capabilities and how broadly it can operate. Understanding these categories helps us see the real limits and potential of AI today.
2. Three Types of AI Based on Capability
(A) Narrow AI (ANI – Artificial Narrow Intelligence)
Narrow AI is designed to perform a single specific task.
Examples:
• Netflix/TikTok recommendations
• Customer service chatbots
• Face recognition on smartphones
This is the type of AI most commonly used today.
(B) General AI (AGI – Artificial General Intelligence)
AGI refers to AI that can think, reason, and solve problems across different domains like humans.
Status: still in research stage.
(C) Super AI (ASI – Artificial Super Intelligence)
ASI is a hypothetical AI that surpasses human intelligence in every domain.
Status: purely theoretical at this point, no real implementation.
3. Why Does This Matter?
Because many fears about AI replacing humans come from confusion between Narrow AI (which we have today) and AGI/ASI (which do not exist yet).
4. Conclusion
Today we live in the era of Narrow AI. AGI and ASI are still long-term research topics that raise important discussions about technology and ethics.
